NEPAL-INDIA-MIGRANTS-KNIVES

In this photograph taken on October 6, 2013, Indian knife sharpeners Sunil Sharma (L) and Birendra Sharma carry their equipment as they cross the streets of Kathmandu in the run-up to Nepal's most popular festival, Dashain as people sharpen knives in preparation for the ritual sacrifice of thousands of goats. Sunil Sharma (35) controls the rotating blade by pulling along a rope while his nephew Birendra (30) sharpens the knives, taking care to cover his nose and mouth with a scarf to protect himself from iron dust flying through the air. As their profession has become increasingly obsolete in India, the pair migrate across the border from their native Bihar state a few times a year, where their visits to shopkeepers, butchers and housewives help them earn enough to support their families back home. Charging twenty Nepali rupees per knife, as opposed to five Nepali rupees in their native India, in a busy period they can earn about 500 Nepali rupees in a day.
