Bay Area Debates Expansion Of Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary
SAN FRANCISCO - DECEMBER 05: A group of Brown Pelicans perch on a rock as a cargo ship passes at Ocean Beach December 5, 2006 in San Francisco, California. Public hearings are being held today in Santa Cruz and San Francisco that could expand and increase restrictions in the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary that was set up by President George H.W. Bush in 1992. Some of the proposed 28 changes would be a ban on sewage dumping from cruise ships, a ban on shark chumming and a ban on jet skis. The return of the brown pelicans is already considered a sign of better environment since the sanctuary was established in 1992 after many were killed off by the pesticide DDT years ago.
