Portrait of Lawrence W. Wetherby
(Original Caption) Former Kentucky Governor Lawrence W. Wetherby (above), a political foe of Gov. Chandler and an ally of Sen. Earle C. Clements, was unanimously nominated by the Democratic State Committee as a candidate for the late Sen. Alben W. Barkley's unexpired term. At the same time, Joseph J. Leary declined an interim appointment to the U.S. Senate as an "Empty Honor," intimating that he had agreed to accept the 5-month appointment by Governor Chandler in the belief that the State Committee would nominate him for the remaining four years of Sen. Barkley's term and thus mend a breach in the Democratic ranks in Kentucky.
