Funeral of Former Black Panther, Herman Wallace
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - OCTOBER 12, 2013:
Fellow Black Panther member and 'Angola 3' colleague looks on at the memorial to Herman Wallace.
Herman Wallace was convicted in the fatal stabbing of a prison guard in 1972. Wallace maintained his innocence and used his time behind bars to draw attention to abusive prison conditions. Most of his 41 years in prison were spent in solitary confinement. Wallace became known as one of the "Angola 3," whose long-term solitary confinement at Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola became a cause celebre for prison reform advocates along with fellow prisoners Robert King and Albert Woodfox. His legal appeals brought his freedom on October 8th 2013 when a federal judge in Baton Rouge ruled his indictment had been unconstitutional because the grand jury excluded women. Released in last stages of terminal liver cancer, Mr Wallace died three days into his new found freedom.
