The badly-burned Hopkins Special in which ace driver Bill Vukovich was burned to death, smolders at Indianapolis Speedway with its driver pinned underneath. Vukovick, two time winner of the 500-mile classic, was in the lead at the 140-mile mark when his racer tangled in a 5-car smashup. None of the other four drivers was seriously hurt. Bob Sweikert won the grueling event.
