Mars One candidates

WASHINGTON, DC- FEBRUARY 10: Daniel Carey, 52 Hometown: Morristown, Tennessee Now: Annandale, Va. Occupation: Data architect Daniel Carey is a self-professed geek, a husband and a father of two kids in their early 20s. If Mars One chooses him for the mission to Mars, hell have to confront all he will miss on Earth, like meeting his future grandchildren. I think about people in the military and other similar services, he says. Because of what they do, it requires them to miss important events for their spouse and their children. But they do it because its important. They do it because they are serving something larger than just themselves or their families. Thats how I view the Mars One mission. This is something that is going to benefit all of mankind. Maybe Im comforting myself, or making excuses, justifying why it would be worthwhile to not be there for the birth of a grandchild. But this is the only thing I can conceive of that would make me pass that up. What he would bring to Mars: My mandolin. Learning new tunes and getting better at playing old ones never gets old. Besides, someone has to start creating Martian Folk Music. (Photo by Marvin Joseph/The Washington Post via Getty Images)
