Lassell built an observatory where he constructed and mounted equatorial refracting telescopes. With these, he discovered planetary satellites including Triton in 1846, (a satellite of Neptune), and Hyperion in 1848, (the eighth moon of Saturn). In 1851 Lassell discovered Ariel and Umbriel, satellites of Uranus. He became president of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1870. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
