Magazine story on the controversy of Jim Thorpe's burial site
SHADY SHORES, TX - FEBRUARY 23, 2012: Bill Thorpe, a resident of Arlington, TX, is the oldest living son of famed football player Jim Thorpe. Bill shows off two old black&white photos - the one of the left is an old photo of himself at about age 7 in Indian dress with his oldest brother Carl Phillip Thorpe (age 9 in the photo). The framed photo on the right is of his brother John "Jack" Thorpe addressing the congressional committee in 1982 on the congressional resolution requesting the return of Jim Thorpe's Olympic gold medals and records. Jack was the chief of the Sac & Fox Nation. This portrait of Bill holding the two photos was taken at the home of Bill's best friend, Robert Wheeler. Robert Wheeler, a resident of Shady Shores, a town in Denton County, TX, wrote a biography of Jim Thorpe. Robert Wheeler and his wife Florence were almost entirely responsible back in the late 1970s for getting Thorpe's Olympic medals restored. Jim Thorpe, an American athlete of mixed ancestry (Caucasian and Native American), was considered one of the most versatile athletes of modern sports. Jim Thorpe, Penn. has Jim Thorpe's burial site and a statue erected to him. In 2010, Bill's brother, John "Jack" Thorpe (who passed away on Feb. 22, 2011), filed a lawsuit against Jim Thorpe, Pa., in hopes to get his father's remains back to Oklahoma on an Indian reservation.
