Mahout - The Keeper of Elephants

KUSHALNAGAR - August 30th 2019: Manjunath bathes Ram with hot water before applying a poultice to a mouth ulcer that Ram has at the Dubare Elephant Camp, Coorg, India on the 30th of August, 2019. Ram injured himself while lying in the river during his attempt to take a bath. His mahout Manjunatha and his kavaadi Pavi discerned that he had sustained an ulcer in the jugular. To treat this ailment, the duo cooked by fire, a medicinal combination of herbs, which they had garnered from the forest nearby. They then applied the dark brown poultice only to the affected area, much to Rams relief. This unconventional but effective remedy is known as Bajaara and has been passed down by generations of tribals inhabiting Dubare.
