Police In Sophiatown

Armed police evict the inhabitants of Sophiatown, a suburb of Johannesburg, 9th February 1955. Two thousand armed police arrived in Sophiatown before dawn and three days earlier than had been announced, to ensure that families were evicted and transported to new locations according to their designated race. In 1955, the Group Areas Act allowed the government to relocate the black inhabitants of Sophiatown to the surrounding countryside, having allocated specific living areas to people of specific races.
