Braunton Idol
An eastern goddess sits in a garage in the village that wants to get rid of her. The Squire and villagers of Braunton, north Devon believe a curse is on the statue which is said to have been stolen form an eastern temple more than a century ago. Sir William Williams, squire of Upcott House where the statue had stood until last week, blames it for his families misfortune and sent it to the Parish Councillor. Now the statue sits at George Staddon's garage waiting for a passing motorist to take a shine to her, 20th September 1954. (Photo by Staff/Mirrorpix/Getty Images)
