An aerial view of Mount Karthala's volcano taken 18 April 2005 photo at the Grand Comore, Comoros' largest island. The volcano which erupted 17 April, sending plumes of smoke and sand-like grit rain into the air over the small communities of Sidjou, Idjnkounzi and Mtsagandjou in the shadow of the mountain, about 40 kilometres [25 miles] northeast of the capital Moroni, had caused panic but officils have been quick to assure there was no lava flow from the eruption and little risk of toxic gases being released into the atmosphere.
