American athlete Andy Payne (1907 - 1977) is congratulated by his father Doc after winning the International Trans-Continental Footrace from Los Angeles to New York, 1928. Payne, a member of the Cherokee Nation, ran the 3,423.5 mi (5,509.6 km) route in 23 days, over an 84-day staged run, crossing the finish line at Madison Square Garden.
