Two women and a child terrified by rats - stock illustration
Two women and a child in the town of Hamelin in Lower Saxony, Germany, being scared by some of the rats which were plaguing the townsfolk in 1284. The event inspired the legend of the Pied Piper who removed the rats by playing his musical instrument but when the townsfolk refused to pay him, he lured away most of their children. From The Pied Piper of Hamelin by Robert Browning, illustrated by Kate Greenaway, published by George Routledge & Sons, London, Glasgow, Manchester and New York in 1888.
