The three Sanbenito worn by heretics during the Spanish Inquisition (circa 16th century). Vintage etching circa 19th century. Sambenito [left] with red saltires, to do penance. The Fuego revolto [center] with flames pointing downwards, was not to be burnt alive at the stake, but have mercy of being strangled before burning. Samarra [right] with dragons, devils, flames and an image of the prisoner, to be burnt alive at the stake.
