Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), wood engraving, published in 1899 - stock illustration
Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis, or Rhinoceros sumatrensis). It is the smallest of the five extant species of the rhinoceros family. Contrary to its name, the animal's occurrence is not limited to the island of Sumatra, rather it was found in large parts of Southeast Asia, but has now been largely exterminated there. The rhino species lives largely solitary in tropical rainforests and feeds on soft plant food. Wood engraving after a drawing by Gustav Mützel (German painter, 1839 - 1893), published in 1899.
