Railroad track of the Isthmus of Panama, woodcut, published 1894 - stock illustration
Historic view of the railroad track in the rainforest of the Isthmus of Panama. After the Gold Rush in California in 1848 a license for a railway connection was awarded. Steamships brought gold diggers first from eastern US ports, who trekked across the isthmus by foot, horse, and later rail. Because of its geographical characteristics, there were plans since the 16th century to build a canal in the place of the Isthmus, which should connect the Atlantic with the Pacific. However, this was realized only by the built from 1906 to 1914 Panama Canal. Wood engraving, published in 1894.
