Penrhyn slate quarries, Wales - stock illustration
Penrhyn Slate Quarry, near Bethesda in Snowdonia, north Wales, was developed in the 1770s by Richard Pennant, though it was in use on a smaller scale far earlier. It is now thought to be the world's deepest slate quarry. Illustration from "Picturesque Europe - The British Isles" published by Cassell Petter & Galpin in 1875 (price 2/6d).
