Miniconjou Lakota dance, South Dakota, 1890, halftone print, published 1893 - stock illustration

Miniconjou Lakota dance at Cheyenne River, South Dakota. Captured Lakota Sioux before their execution at the Battle of Wounded Knee (December 29, 1890). Original title of photograph: At the Dance. Indian Grass Dance on Reservation Group portrait of Big Foot's band in an open field, at a Grass Dance on the Cheyenne River, S.D. - on or near Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. In the Wounded Knee massacre in what is now the town of Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, 300 defenseless members of various Sioux Indian tribes were murdered by members of the 7th US Cavalry Regiment. The massacre broke the resistance of the indigenous population in the Dakotas. It continues to influence the culture and life of reservation Indians today. A 14-day memorial event takes place every year, which almost paralyzes life on the reservations. The march from Standing Rock to Pine Ridge is reenacted by members of the tribes. Halftone print based on a photograph (August 9, 1890) by John C. H. Grabill (American photographer, 1849 - 1903), published in 1893.
