Mauch Chunk - former coal mining region in Pennsylvania. The site founded in 1818 by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company as Mauch Chunk quickly became a railway and coal shipping center. After the death of Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe, 1953, the municipalities Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk merged, they took the name, to attract tourists in the hope and stimulate the economy. The town is also called the "Switzerland of America", due to the picturesque scenery, the mountain location and its architecture. Wood engraving , published in 1882
