Japanese Tea Garden Mount Fuji 19th century 1868 - stock illustration
This is the Japanese Tea Garden at the gardens of the Emperor of Japan in Yedo, Tokyo, Japan. It is a hand-coloured antique wood print, originally from a French periodical that was issued between 1860 and 1870. The author was Edouard Charton, and the English edition (All Around The World) was published in 1874. There is a small amount of print-through from the back. If, as seems likely, the mountain with volcano smoke in the background is Mount Fuji, then this may represent the Hoei eruption of 1707-1708. There have been no recorded eruptions since this time. Captions on this print: Signed A de BAR (left), Hildibrand (right) The captions indicate that the drawing was done by Alexandre de Bar, and the engraving by Henri Theophile Hildibrand (1824-1897). A variety of other antique and historical engravings: .
