Historical view of Petrovaradin Fortress, Serbia, steel engraving, published 1836 - stock illustration
Historical view of Petrovaradin Fortress (German. Peterwardein) - a fortress in the town of Petrovaradin, itself part of the City of Novi Sad, Serbia. In the Battle of Petrowardein on August 5, 1716, Prince Eugene of Savoy and 80,000 Imperial troops defeated a 150,000-strong Ottoman army. The victory of the Austrian army signalled the end of the Turkish threat to Central Europe. Occupied by Hungarian insurgents during the Hungarian Revolutionary War from 1848 to 1849, the fortress of Petrowardein was forced to surrender to the Imperial troops on September 6, 1849. Steel engraving, published in 1836.
