Historical view of a glacier table - a glacial erratic perched on a pedestal of ice. When a glacier melts, it can happen that the glacial ice remains frozen beneath a (usually large and flat) stone, protected from the sun, for some time, leaving the stone slab in the shape of a table above the remaining glacier surface. This creates a mound of ice, bearing a stone on top, which survives as a glacial table for some time until gravity or other external influences finally cause the ice to melt in one place, causing the table to collapse.
