Dr W G Grace (Victorian engraving) - stock illustration
"Engraving of Dr W G Grace from 'The Boy's Own Paper' of Saturday 3rd July, 1880. The newspaper, with its mixture of morality, improvement, adventure and humour, was first published by the Religious Tract Society in 1879. Dr Grace was one of the most famous ever English cricketers. An amateur, he played for a record 44 seasons, from 1865-1908, and captained England as well a number of other teams. He was an all-rounder (batsman and bowler) as well as being a prime fielder and also excelled in other sports as well as being a medical practitioner. He was always controversial, being fiercely competitive and known for 'gamesmanship'. It is also thought that, although an 'amateur', he actually earned a considerable amount of money from his cricketing activities. His nicknames included W.G., The Doctor, The Champion, The Big 'Un, The Old Man. He is buried in Beckenham Cemetery, south London, near his home."
