Charles Martel defeated the Moors in the Battle of Tours (October 10, 732 ), also called the Battle of Poitiers. Charles Martel (Latin: Carolus Martellus, c. 688 – 741) literally Charles the Hammer, was a Frankish military and political leader. He was also the father of Pepin the Short and grandfather of Charlemagne. Woodcut engraving after a painting by Hermann Freihold Plüddemann (German painter, 1809 - 1868), published in 1881.
