August von Kotzebue, (1761-1819), German playwright, wood engraving, published 1893 - stock illustration
August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue (1761 - 1819) - German playwright, writer and librettist. In the last years of his life he worked as a Russian consul general. The murder of Kotzebue in 1819 gave Metternich the pretext to issue the Karlsbad decrees, which dissolved the fraternities, crushed the liberal press and seriously restricted academic freedom in the federal states. Wood engraving, published in 1893.
