CU Paul Reynaud (Former French Prime Minister): SOF:
- Churchill is dead. Day by day the British people, and all his admirers in the world have followed his last battle. Facing death he was as powerful and as brave as he was facing the enemy. He has been the greatest man of his time and in my opinion the greatest man in the whole history of Great Britain. I see him today not as I saw him on the cold desert snowed by age, but as he was during the war the most tragic moment of the history of his people and mine. Calm and powerful.
MS Cont: Even in the worst moments no word of bitterness passed between us. When the French government was at Bordeaux, the spectacle of the procession of refugees was too much for feeble hearts. A majority was formed against me by my own government. Churchill thought, and I thought too, that his generous offer of a Franco British union would allow me to overcome the Opposition.
CS Cont: Alas I was the only one in the government to support the proposal and the President of the Republic refused to allow me to form a ministry of those who were determined to fight on. Churchill has been my brother in battle, before the war, when we fought to open the eyes of our two governments to the Nazi peril.
CU Cont: After the war we served together the European ideal as members of the European Assembly at Strasbourg. I remember one day we both spoke from the balcony to the crowd. Churchill began: Are you ready for anything? I am going to speak French. He was a great orator. During the war he revealed to the British people their own souls.
CS Cont: Never to my dying day shall I ever forget the words of Churchill in his broadcast to France - We Shall Never Surrender. We shall continue the struggle until the greatness and dignity of France has been restored. That is a sentence no Frenchman should ever forget.
