Rare kangaroo rat ‘Euphrates jerboa’ found in E. Turkey

ELAZIG, TURKEY - AUGUST 25: Turkish villager on Tuesday (Aug. 24) found a rare jerboa in the eastern province of Elazig. In Baskil district, Irfan Solak spotted the kangaroo rat "Euphrates jerboa” that he had never seen before while he was taking his cattle to water. The man initially thought it was a rat, but realized that the rodent was different after it started hopping like kangaroos. Solak took it under protection so that the cattle would not harm the small creature. Then he brought the weary animal to his home and fed it with corn and wheat. Solak will release the jerboa to nature after it gets well. Euphrates jerboa included in the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species is characteristically known as hopping rodents. They have been found in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and also live rarely in southeastern Turkey. These rare animals look like miniature kangaroos and have some external similarities. Both have long hind legs, very short forelegs, and long tails. Jerboas live in semi-deserts, subtropical or tropical dry lowland grassland, and hot deserts, and they can survive without drinking any water.(Footage by Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
