Tuaregs in Algeria perform traditional sword dance on Sahara
TAMANRASSET, ALGERIA - RECENT, JAN. 2023: The Tuareg people of Algeria are performing the traditional dance of 'Takoba', or Tagouba, which is done with a sword of Berber style.
The dance once symbolized the celebration of the Tuaregs' victory in their fight for freedom against French colonialism and is now a part of their cultural heritage.
Women are adorned with their most beautiful jewels and sing Tuareg songs while men wear traditional costumes and armed with a sword like a warrior.
The Tuaregs are also called the "blue people" as they traditionally wear the indigo dye colored clothes.
An estimated 3 million Tuareg people live in the central Sahara desert, a territory that covers the periphery of five different countries, Libya, Algeria, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.
The community is Muslim, and they are believed to have been historically influential in the spread of Islam in North Africa.
