They first settled in Bikrampur and later spread from there to remote areas of Bangladesh and even to West Bengal and Assam in India. Veda's original name is Mantang. The name Bede is derived from the pejorative Baidya (hammered doctor), modified 'Vaidya' (physician). Since most of the Vedas are concerned with medicine, Mantanga is historically referred to as Veda. Bedera is an expatriate section of the Mon-tong tribe of Arakan State.
