Ian Hislop after Sutcliffe libel case: 'We won!', UK; 1989

Ian Hislop, editor of the satirical and current affairs publication 'Private Eye', says, 'We came in here to prove that those sorts of libel settlements are mad, excessive and over the top and the Court of Appeal has quashed that sum of money, so, yeah... We won!' He was speaking outside the Royal Courts of Justice (sometimes referred to as the 'Law Courts') after an appeal contesting the decision to award Sonia Sutcliffe (the legally-separated wife of the serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, dubbed 'the Yorkshire Ripper') unprecedented libel damages of £600,000. The damages owed by 'Private Eye' would be reduced as a result of the appeal. The libel case concerned an allegation published in 'Private Eye' in 1981, later accepted by the magazine as untrue, that Mrs. Sutcliffe was prepared to sell her story as the wife of a mass murderer to 'The Daily Mail' for a quarter of a million pounds. The Strand, Central London, UK; 19th October 1989. (BBC News, 292/89/11EC – 19/10/1989 – AEXZ288W)
