Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal says in his opening remarks at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the name image likeness athlete representation rights system in college sports that lawmakers know this system of college athletics is in need of reform, which has been exploitive, financially, emotionally, and physically, and that it has failed to safeguard athletes against the abusive and often exploitive system that takes advantage of their blood, sweat, and tears in creating a $16 billion industry, who all too often fail to benefit from it.
