Humour spoon-bill spoonbills feeding Cruikshank 19th century cartoon - stock illustration
This is a cartoon etching by the well-known Victorian social caricaturist / cartoonist George Cruikshank (1792 - 1878), dated February 1, 1831. (1831 is in the reign of William IV, but most of Cruikshank's artistic work was in the long reign of Queen Victoria.) A simple play on words, and no scathing social comment in this pun on the name of an African bird, the spoonbill. Description:: Two spoonbills, their heads and beaks transformed into spoons, are dipping into a bowl of soup. Their legs and feet are formed from some metal tableware similar to a knife rest.
